キャッツ・イン・ザ・クレードル(Cat’s In The Cradle)を直訳すると、「猫はゆりかご」となるのでしょうが、これと似たような言い回しにキャッツ・クレードル(cat’s cradle)、つまり「あやとり」があります。

これを歌っているのは1981年に事故で亡くなったハリー・チェイピン(Harry Chapin: 1942-1981)で、妻のサンディー(Sandy Chapin: 1934-)との共作です。見事に「父親」が描かれています。

ところで、サビの部分に　”the silver spoon”　”Little Boy Blue”　”the man in the moon”　というのが出てきます。

“the silver spoon”は「よい」家庭に生まれてきたということをいう表現で、次の”Little Boy Blue”は『マザー・グース（イギリスの伝承童謡集）』の唄にでてくる少年のことです。そして、”the man in the moon” もマザー・グースに登場する月の男です。

門外漢なのでよく分かりませんが、マザー・グースに精通した人なら、この詞をもっと楽しめるのかなあ、なんて羨ましく思ってしまいます。

It occurred to me

うちの子が生まれたのがついこの前
いたって普通に生を受けた
あちこち出張、稼がなくてはいけないし
留守の間に歩けるようになった
気づいてみたらことばも覚えて大きくなった
僕、パパみたいになるんだ

帰ってくるのはいつなのパパ　分からない

息子が10歳になったのもついこの前

おやじ、車の鍵を貸してほしいんだ
それは後でね、お願いだから鍵貸して

何時帰ってくるんだ、お前　分からない
でも一緒にいられるね
そうしたら一緒に過ごそうね

仕事も引退幾年月、息子は家を出て行った
電話をかけて話してみたのもついこの前
お前がよければ会いに来ないか
そうだね、ぜひ時間があればね
仕事は大変だし、子供は風邪だし
でも話が出来てよかったよ
本当によかったよ

受話器を置いてふと思う
息子も結局俺と同じ
あいつも俺と全く同じ

猫はゆりかご、銀の匙
泣き虫ブルー、月の人
今度はいつ来るんだ　分からない
でも家に行ったら付き合うよ
そしたら楽しく過ごそうね
