このブログのタイトルとして拝借させてもらった曲です。ザ・タウン・アイ・ラブド・ソー・ウェル、「私が愛した町」とは、作者フィル・コールター(Phil Coulter: 1942-)にとってのデリー(Derry)です。

そのデリーに起こった悲劇を、敬愛して止まないルーク・ケリーが心の底から魂を込めて歌い上げます。その声には、心を動かす何かがあります。

Creggan: クレガン、デリー（後述）郊外の町
the Moor: ザ・ムーア、デリー市内のローン・ムーア通り(Lone Moor Road)ではないかと思われる
the Bog: ザ・ボグ、デリー市内のザ・ボグサイド(the Bogside)地域
Derry: アイルランド島北部の都市、現在は英国領北アイルランド

Those were happy days in so many many ways

In the early morning the shirt factory horn
Called women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog
While the men on the dole played a mother’s role
Fed the children and then walked the dog

And when times got tough there was just about enough
And they saw it through without complaining
But deep inside was a burning pride
In the town I loved so well

There was music there in the Derry air
Like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day that I earned my first pay
When I played in a small pick-up band

There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
For I’d learned about life and I’d found a wife
In the town I loved so well

But when I returned how my eyes have burned
To see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed-out bars
And the gas that hangs on to every breeze

Now an army’s installed by that old gasyard wall
And the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns, oh my God what have they done
To the town I loved so well

Now the music’s gone but they carry on
For their spirit’s been bruised, never broken
They will not forget but their hearts are set
On tomorrow and peace once again

For what’s done is done and what’s won is won
And what’s lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright brand-new day

ボール遊びをしていた瓦斯工場
鼻をつく煙の中に笑い声が響いてた

刑務所、水飲み広場を通って
雨の中、暗くなった家路を急いだ
楽しかったあの頃はいろいろあった
愛してやまぬあの町で

朝早くシャツ工場のサイレンが鳴り
クレガン、ムーア、ボグから女性が来る
失業中の父親は母親に代わって
子供に食事をさせて犬を散歩に連れて行く

文句も言わずに時の過ぎ行くままに
辛い時代に、何とかうまくやっていた
胸に募るは燃え上がる誇り
愛してやまぬあの町を

デリーの町には音楽が流れ
言葉のようにみんなが分かり合えた
今でも頭をよぎる、生まれて初めて稼いだ日
小さながらくたバンドの演奏だった

青春を過ごした町の隠し切れないこの思い
悲しみにくれ、すべてを残して去った町
人生を学んだ、妻とめぐり合った
愛してやまぬあの町で

故郷に帰って燃えたぎる視線の先には
どうしたことか、やられた町がひとつある
装甲車がいる、爆破でやられたバーがある
ガスにまみれた風が吹く

軍隊がいる、あの懐かしき瓦斯工場
鉄条網がどんどん高くなりやがる
戦車や銃でいったい何をしてくれたんだ
