日本が極東なら、ほぼ極西と言ってもいいようなグレートブリテン島の北部スコットランドの北東部にアバディンシャーと呼ばれる地域があります。その、択捉よりも高い緯度にある、アバディンシャーの中心地がアバディーンで、そこからさらに北に何キロもいったところにストリッケンというところがあります。その北東に小高いモーモンド・ブレーズがあります。

ブレーズ(braes)を「普通の」英語にすると、ヒルズ(hills)になります。フェアウィル・テ・タルワシーにでてきたモーモンド・ヒルズになります。

その丘陵地の斜面に二頭の動物がいます。「白馬(The White Horse)」と「白鹿(The White Stag)」です。これは、一般にヒル・フィギュア(hill figure)と呼ばれているもので、丘陵斜面に描かれている絵などを指します。

モーモンド丘陵の馬と鹿は石灰岩で作られているようです。俗に地上絵と呼ばれる類なのかもしれませんが、いつ作ったのでしょうか。そして、誰と誰が作ったのでしょうか。そして、何のために作ったのでしょうか。

考えるだけで答えが出ないほうが面白いのかもしれません。
