スタン・ジョーンズ(Stan Jones)らの手による「ゴースト・ライダーズ・イン・ザ・スカイ(Ghost Riders In The Sky)」は、1949年にバール・アイブス(Burl Ives)がコロンビアより発売してヒットしました。

この曲にのせてパロディーを作ったのが、ビル・ヒル(Bill Hill)です。そして、ザ・コリーズ(The Corries)も歌います。

「ゴースト・ライダーズ」にはスカイ（sky：空）がでてくるのですが、この「ザ・ポートリー・キッド」にもスカイ(Skye：スカイ島)がでてきます。

スコットランドはヒーラン（ハイランド）地方の酒場にやってきた「荒くれ者」が「スネークス・アンド・ラダーズ（蛇と梯子）」というすごろくに似たゲームをします。蛇のマスに止まると尻尾が示すマスまで戻り、梯子のマスに止まると上のマスまで一気に登れるというルールがあります。

そして、上がりまであと少し、というところでいかさまを指摘され、喧嘩がはじまります。

田舎の酒場での日常茶飯事を描いた心温まる作品に仕上がっています。

Skye: スカイ、スコットランドのヘブリデス諸島にある島のひとつ
Aberdeen: アバディーン、スコットランド中東部にある人口第三位の港町

Stornoway: ストーノウェー、ヘブリデス諸島のルイス島にある町
Crabbie’s: クラビーズ、19世紀初頭クラビーさんが製造したエジンバラ生まれのジンジャー・ビール
slangevar: スランジヴァー、スコッツ・ゲール語でのあいさつSlainte Mhath（スローンチェヴァー「こんにちは」）が多少変化したもの、文字通りの意味は「よい健康状態へ」
Babycham: ベイビーシャム、1940年代にイングランドのサマーセットで開業したシャワリング兄弟が売り出した炭酸アルコール飲料、マスコットは青い蝶ネクタイをした子鹿
Auchtertool: アハタトゥール、スコットランド南東部ファイフ(Fife)にある村
MacMerry: マクメリー、スコットランド南東部沿岸にある村
Ballachulish Ferry: バラフリシュ・フェリー、スコットランド中西部にある町バラフリッシュからでるフェリー
sgian dubh: スキーン・ドゥー、スコッツ・ゲーリック(Scots Gaelic)でスコットランドハイランド地方の民族衣装の一部をなす小さいナイフ、通常は靴下の中に入れておく
Galashiels: ガラシールズ、スコットランド南部イングランドとの境セルカークシャー(Selkirkshire)にある町
Peterheid: ピーターヒード、スコットランド中東部アバディンシャーにある港町ピーターヘッド(Peterhead)
the Rio Tweed: ザ・リオ・トゥウィード、スコットランド南部を流れるツイード川(the River Tweed)

He only had but one to go an the other man was beat

Men dived behind the rubber plants to try an save their skins
The accordionist stopped playing, his sidekick dropped the spoons

But the Southerner crept up behind his features wracked wi pain

The fight went ragin on all night till openin time next day
Wi a break for soup an stovies aff a coronation tray
It was gettin kind o obvious that neither man would win

金を賭けて蛇と梯子ゲームをやっている
四人目がマクメリーからやって来た南のやつで
もともとはバラフリッシュ・フェリーのギャンブラー

梯子に乗って49マス目であと一歩
一マスいくだけで勝てるそんなときに
賭け師がボードをひっくり返しいかさま野郎が叫ぶ

男たちは身を守ろうと観葉植物裏に飛び込み
アコーディオン演奏は止まり、隣ではスプーンを落とす者も
梯子を二回登っただろう、お前おかしなまねしたな
俺がサイを振ろうとするたびにテーブルをたたきやがって

一晩中ケンカは続きそのまま翌日の開店時間

勝負がつかないことは火を見るより明らかで
おいやめろ観光バスが来たぞのでかい声が飛んでくる
