森に住んでいるおばあさんに生後三ヶ月の赤ん坊がいました。おばあさんはナイフで心臓を突き刺しました。おばあさんは捕まって絞首刑になりました。
ダブリンには川がいくつも流れているようです。その中のひとつ、ソーリヤ川のほとりでのお話です。
子供はこの歌を大人から聞いて、「ひとりで森の中に入るのはやめよう」、「川で遊ぶのはやめよう」と思ったのでしょうか。それとも、「いらない」子供をそうしなければならない何かがあったのでしょうか。
どの国にも昔話が伝承されて、今も語り続けられていますが、この歌もそんな中のひとつだと思います。
歌っているのはザ・ダブリナーズのロニー・ドリュー(Ronnie Drew: 1934-2008)です。なかなか渋みのある声をしています。
