これまで一度も寝台車に乗ったことがありません。子供の頃は、一人時刻表を眺めては頭の中で「さくら」、「富士」、「出雲」、と数多くのブルートレインに乗ってはみたのですが、現実はそんなに甘い世界ではありませんでした。

この曲を作ったのが、シカゴ・ショーティーというニックネームを持つスティーブ・グッドマン(Steve Goodman: 1948-1984)です。見るからにいい人です。1972年にブッダ・レーベルから発売された「スティーブ・グッドマン」というタイトルのLPに収録された曲です。

私も大好きな歌手のひとりなのですが、惜しむらくは、白血病で1984年に36歳という若さでこの世を去っていることです。

オールド・グレー・ホイッスル・テスト(Old Grey Whistle Test、イギリスBBCの音楽番組)の動画では、ABC（朝日放送ではなく、アメリカの放送局）の「グッドモーニングアメリカ(Good Morning America)」というニュース番組は、この歌のサビの部分からとった、と説明が出てきます。

The City Of New Orleans: ザ・シティー・オブ・ニュー・オーリンズ、シティー・オブ・ニュー・オーリンズ号、アメリカ合衆国イリノイ州シカゴとルイジアナ州ニュー・オーリンズの間約1500キロを南北に結ぶ列車の愛称、途中テネシー州メンフィスを経由する

Kankakeevカンカキー、カンカキー駅、シカゴを出て二つ目の停車駅
Pullmanvプルマン、ジョージ・プルマン(George Pullman)、アメリカ人の発明家で寝台車を開発した19世紀後半に活躍した人物
