子供のころ大森駅から乗る電車は茶色い、油の板の京浜東北線でした。颯爽と向こうを通過するのはオレンジとグリーンの湘南電車、ただ眺めていた記憶があります。

そのころは、まさかプロテスタントがオレンジで、カトリックがグリーンなどとは、思いもよらぬことでした。

親の宗派が異なると子供にとっては大変なことであるらしいのですが、これは全く分かりません。

それよりも宗派を超えて結婚したということのほうが驚きに値します。宗派を超えた愛はもはやひとつの宗派ではないでしょうか。

Ulster: アルスター、アイルランド島北部のイギリスの一部となっている地方名で、プロテスタントが多数を占める地域
County Cork: カウンティー・コーク、アイルランドの南部にある行政区画
Orangeman: オレンジマン、プロテスタントの人
The Orange Flute: ジ・オレンジ・フルート、曲名
The Hero Of The Boyne: ザ・ヒーロー・オブ・ザ・ボイン、17世紀末に起こった「ボイン川の戦い」をテーマにした曲

One day me ma’s relations came round to visit me
Just as me father’s kinfolk were sitting down to tea
We tried to smooth things over, they all began to fight
And me being strictly neutral, I kicked everyone in sight

My parents never could agree about my type of school
My learning was all done at home, that’s why I’m such a fool
They’ve both passed on, God rest ‘em, but I was left between

二つの教会で式を挙げて幸せに暮らしていたのに
僕が生まれてからはいろいろ大変なことになった

洗礼でデビッドアンソニーをもらったのに
父さんにはビリーだし、母さんからはパットだった

日曜日になると母さんと胸を張ってミサに行って
その後、オレンジロッジが心をほぐしてくれるんだ
どっちに行ってもお前はこっちだって言われるけど

レベルソングを歌っていると母さんは大喜びなんだけど
父さんは飛び上がって、おい、こっちに来い、だって
そんなものはうんざりだってコインをくれて
オレンジフルートとかボイン川の英雄を歌わせるんだ

母さんの親戚がうちにやってきたときのこと
父さんの親戚も座ってお茶を飲もうかっていうころ
何事もなくって感じだったのに、喧嘩が始まった
で僕は完璧中立だから目の前の人だけを蹴っちゃった

両親は学校については意見が合わなかったから
家が勉強の場になって、だからこんな馬鹿なんだけど
