アーサー・ミラー(Arthur Miller: 1915-2005)のピュリッツァー賞授賞作『セールスマンの死(Death of a Salesman)』とは関係ないスティーブ・グッドマン(Steve Goodman: 1948-1984)の「セールスマンの死」です。

登場する男は教科書どおりの女に弱い典型的な男です。こういう男は女にやられます。やられてはじめて分かると思いきや、なかなか学習できないのです。

だから殺されたのかどうかは分かりません。

the Interstate: インターステート、アメリカ合衆国の各州をつなぐ幹線道路
Rin-Tin-Tin: リンチンチン、アメリカで放映されていた犬を主役としたドラマ『名犬リンチンチン』にでてくるジャーマン・シェパード、日本で放映されていた「刑事犬カール」に出ていた犬と同じ犬種

A traveling salesman stopped for gas as it was getting late
He sure was feeling tired and it was snowing on the Interstate
He says, won’t you fill her up, my friend, and see if my oil’s alright
And do you know a place where a tired-out traveling man might spend the night

The attendant winked at him and says, I’ll bet you’ve been around
Now the man who puts up lodgers here is known as Farmer Brown
You’ll find him in that old stone house that’s just at the edge of town
And he’s got a fifteen-year-old daughter who likes to fool around

Now the salesman winked right back at him and a smile came to his lips
He paid for the gas and the oil and then he gave that man a tip
He started out and pushed that old gas pedal down to the floor
He was off like a bat and in nothing flat he was at the farmer’s door

Now the door opened up and a beautiful girl says, won’t you come on in
That traveling salesman’s tongue was hanging out like Rin-Tin-Tin
That old gas station attendant said I would find you here
And do you have a suitable room you could rent to me, my dear

Alas, kind sir, I’m sorry but the last one’s gone, you see
So if you want to spend the night, you’ll have to sleep with me
He says, how fortuitous, my pretty little miss
And he throws his arms around her and he gives that girl a kiss

Now her warm and tender ruby lips he scarcely could believe
And he never saw the hammer she had hidden up her sleeve
She said, I’m getting sleepy, why don’t we go to bed
And as they turned to climb the stairs she whopped him on the head

Now the very next day, the salesman’s car, with brand new license plates
Was sitting at Farmer Brown’s gas station out on the Interstate
So all you traveling salesmen who might be passing through
You better watch your step or the traveling salesman joke will be on you

疲れはてた出張中のセールスマンが夜遅く
雪の国道を通りガソリンスタンドに来ました
満タン頼むね、それからオイルも見ておいて
あと、クタクタなんだけど泊まれるところ知ってるかな

店員はウインクひとつ、この辺にありますよ
ブラウンさんっていう人がロッジをやってるんですが
ちょうど町外れにある石積みの建物なんですけど
そこの15歳の娘さんがいたずら好きなんです

セールスマンもウインクで返すも口元は笑みでゆるみ
ガソリンとオイルの代金を支払い、チップもはずむ
キーを回して、アクセルをベタ踏みで出発すると
コウモリのごとく一瞬でブラウンロッジに到着

ドアが開いて可愛い女の子からどうぞ入ってっと聞くと
セールスマンのベロはリンチンチンのようにハーハーハー
スタンドの人からここに泊まれる所があるってきいて
一泊したいんだけど、ひと部屋借りられるかなあ

まあ、お客さん、最後の一部屋がさっき入ってしまって
もし、お泊まりなら、私と一緒になっちゃいますけど
それはそれは、なんとまあ、なんというか、お嬢さん
両腕で体を抱き寄せてキスをするセールスマン

こんな暖かくてやわらかいルビーのような唇とは
袖に隠し持っていた金槌に気づかない男に
眠くなったので、ベッドにでもどうというお嬢さんは
階段を昇ろうとする男の頭めがけてガーンと一撃

さあ翌日、男の車は真新しいナンバーをつけて
例の道路沿いのガソリンスタンドに停まっています
そこの出張中のセールスマンのみなさん
気をつけないとシャレですまなくなりますよ
