曾祖父母から祖父母へ、祖父母から親へ、親から子へ、子から孫へと口承伝播されていく歌は伝言ゲームの様相を呈し、考えれば考えるほど首をひねることになります。

初代カーター・ファミリー（A.P.カーター、セーラ・カーター、メイベル・カーター）が1920年代後半に録音した曲で、その後スタンダードとなり、世紀をまたいで歌い継がれていく代表曲になりました。

時を経て、カーター・ファミリーは母と娘の言わば第二世代になりました。富士山の山のようで気が引けますが、お母さんのマザー・メイベル(Mother Maybelle: 1909-1978)に、3人の娘ヘレン(Helen Carter: 1927-1998)、ジューン(June Carter: 1929-2003)、そしてアニタ(Anita Carter: 1933-1999)が加わったのです。
