ロッド・スチュワート(Rod Stewart: 1945-)の曲に入っていったきっかけは、その物語性でした。物語ですから、その真偽は考えずに素直に聴いていられます。

1986年に発表されたアルバム「ロッド・スチュワート」の一曲目を飾るこの物語は、花婿がやってもいない強盗容疑で疑われ、挙句の果てに看守を即死に至らしめ、死刑判決を受けるというものです。

現実の世界なら、ありえないだろう、の一言で済ますこともできるかもしれませんが、ありえるのです。

歌の物語世界は想像以上に懐が深いのです。

The old courthouse was crowded
As the judge reviewed the case
In a year of re-election
He was desperate to impress
Innocent or guilty

To send Jimmy down for life

Disbelief and anger
As they dragged him away

They beat him like a slave
But his use of martial arts
Struck a blow for liberty
Felled a guard with a fist of iron
And killed him instantly

All the press surrounded Amanda
