むかし小さかったころ、何の知識もなかったので、入ってきた情報からIRAとテロを勝手に結びつけていました。その後、大人になり、こうしてアイルランドの歌に接するようになると、？？？という感覚になりました。
歴史的に色々あって、簡単に語れるものではないなあ、という印象なのですが、やっぱりお隣ご近所の国々とうまくやっていくっていうのは相当難しいことだ、という考えはあります。
Monaghan: モナハン、アイルランドのモナハン県の県庁所在地、イギリスの北アイルランドと境を接する
England: イングランド、イギリス
IRA: アイアールエー、アイルランド共和軍(Irish Republic Army)
Connolly: コノリー、ジェームス・コノリー(James Connolly: 1868-1916)、アイルランド独立運動で中心的役割を果たす
Ireland: アイルランド、アイルランド共和国
Counties: カウンティーズ、アイルランドの行政区画の中のひとつ、県
John Bull: ジョン・ブル、イギリスのこと
de Valera: デ・ヴァレラ、エーモン・デ・ヴァレラ(Éamon de Valera: 1882-1975)、アイルランド独立運動の指導者のひとりで、のちにアイルランド首相を務める
the Quislings: ザ・クウィズリングス、ノルウェーの司令官ヴィドクン・クウィズリング(Vidkun Quisling: 1887-1945)から作られたことばで、「裏切り者」の意味

This Ireland of mine has for long been half-free
Six Counties are under John Bull’s Monarchy
And still de Valera is greatly to blame
For shirking his part in the patriot game
I don’t mind a bit if I shoot down police
They are lackeys for war never guardians of peace
But yet at deserters I’m never let aim
Those rebels who sold out the patriot game
And now as I lie with my body all holes
I think of those traitors who bargained and sold
I’m sorry my rifle has not done the same
For the Quislings who sold out the patriot game
戦う若者よ、この歌の間に兵に志願してくれ
自国を愛することが酷いことになっている
炎が広がるスピードで恐怖が広がって
みんなどこか愛国ゲームに入っている

勇敢なIRAの地元の戦闘員と
あちこち転々として2年になるだろうか
英雄の本を読んでいるから、ああなりたい

椅子に座ったコノリーが撃たれる様子
戦闘の傷で血が流れ、体はボロボロ
鞭で打たれて体がよじれ、カタワ同然
こんな話ですぐに愛国ゲームに入った
わがアイルランドはずっと自由は半分
6つの県がジョン・ブルの帝政下にある
それでもデ・ヴァレラが非難されるのは
愛国ゲームの役割を全うしなかったからだ
警官を撃ったとしても少しも気にしない
戦争の奴隷で平和の警備はしない奴らだ
でも脱走兵には絶対銃口は向けない
愛国ゲームから逃げ出した反乱者には
今やもう起きることもできず体は穴だらけ
安売りをした裏切り者の顔が頭に浮かぶ
このライフルで同じことをやっておけばよかった
