バイユー(bayou)とは、低地帯で緩やかに流れる川を指すことばです。アメリカ合衆国南部のミシシッピー川下流デルタ地帯を想起させることばだそうです。

ロイ・オービソン(Roy Orbison: 1936-1988)が作ったのが『ブルー・バイユー』、そして、ギブ・ギルボー(Gib Guilbeau: 1937-2016)が作ったのが『ビッグ・バイユー』です。

ギブ・ギルボーは1960年ごろから活躍しているアーチストで、フィドルを演奏します。そのギブ・ギルボーが組んだスワンプウォーターというバンドが1970年に出したLPに収録されています。

この曲を聴いていると、身も心も「緩やかな」気分になります。
