好きか嫌いかは別にして、クジラを食べて育ってきた者にしてみたら、この曲は素直に聞くことはなかなか難しいかもしれません。
1973年に発表されたジュディー・コリンズ(Judy Collins: 1939-)のLP『トゥルー・ストーリーズ・アンド・アザー・ドリームズ』に収録されているのですが、「日本人は鯨を捕りすぎて、今ではカタツムリを捕っている」という歌詞があるのです。
日本人である私はこれまでにカタツムリを捕って食べたことはありません。同様に、こういう歌詞を書いたからといってジュディー・コリンズの曲を聴かなくなるとか、ジュディー本人のことを嫌いになるとか、抗議活動をしたくなるとか、そういうこともまったくありません。
体内に異物が入ってきたらある種の防御や攻撃反応がおこるように、「違う」考え方に対して攻撃的態度をとるというのは生物にとっての真理のひとつでしょうし、攻撃されたからといって必ずしも攻撃で返すわけでもないというのもその類でしょう。
この曲が外国のテレビ番組『セサミ・ストリート』で放映されたときは、”The Japanese have caught so many …”の”The Japanese”部分が別の表現（Some of them …)に変わっていたのです。ジュディー・コリンズが書く歌詞は理解できますが、歌詞変更の放送はちょっともったいないな、という感じがします。
