英語のcinder（シンダー）は「燃え殻」や「灰」をあらわします。したがって、シンデレラ(Cinderella)はさしずめ「灰っこ」でしょうが、グリム童話を読むと「灰かぶり姫」と訳出されています。

その「灰かぶり」が、産みの母の死後、継母と二人の姉からいろいろと虐げられます。王子主催の宴に行きたくても、運動会の小麦粉の中の飴玉探しのごとく、灰の中の豆探しをやらされます。

こんな悲しいシンデレラを題材にしたかどうかはわかりませんが、タウンズ・ヴァン・ザントは「サッド・シンデレラ(Sad Cinderella)」という曲を作りました。
