1966年、ザ・ビートルズ(The Beatles)のジョン・レノン(John Lennon: 1940-1980)が雑誌のインタビューに答え、その流れで「おれたちのほうが今となってはキリストより人気がありますよ」という趣旨の発言をします。

質の悪いアンプのようにこの発言だけが増幅され文脈に関係なく取り沙汰され、アメリカ合衆国の信仰心篤い人たちから非難されることになります。けしからん奴だ、商品を買うな、曲を流すな、など、逆風にさらされることになります。

そんな中、マット・マギン(Matt McGinn: 1928-1977)が、『権兵衛さんの赤ちゃんが風邪ひいた』や『おたまじゃくしは蛙の子』でメロディーがおなじみの『リパブリック賛歌(The Battle Hymn Of The Republic)』にのせて、うたいます。

ただでは歌いません。「ベトナム」をもってきます。そんな時代です。
