1912年1月11日、アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ州ローレンスの繊維工場でストライキが始まり、約三カ月続きます。そこで行われたデモで掲げられたスローガンが「ブレッド・アンド・ローゼズ（パン、そして、バラ）」だったそうです。

1911年に出版されたジェームズ・オッペンハイム(James Oppenheim: 1882-1932)の詩に曲をつけて歌われたのがこの歌で、ジュディー・コリンズ(Judy Collins: 1939-)がアルバムのタイトルにもしました。ジョーン・バエズ(Joan Baez: 1941-)とミミ・ファリーニャ(Mimi Fariña: 1945-2001)姉妹も歌っています。

また、21世紀に入って、2006年にキャサリン・パターソン(Katherine Paterson: 1932-)によって、”Bread And Roses, Too”という先述のストを題材にした小説も上梓されました。

そんなことより、この曲を聴いていると、何か大きいものに抱かれている気がしてなりません。思い込みや勘違いでもかかまいません。
