フランシス・ホジソン・バーネット(Frances Hodgson Burnett: 1849-1924)による『秘密の花園(The Secret Garden)』が全編出版されたのが1911年、ジュディー・コリンズ(Judy Collins: 1939-)の「シークレット・ガーデンズ」が出たのが1973年です。

ジュディー・コリンズが主人公の少女メアリーになりきって作ったどうかは分かりませんが、この曲を聴いたときはバーネットの小説を全編読んだことがないくせにそんなことを思い浮かべてしまいました。

「秘密の花園」という日本語には、いろいろな言外の意味が含まれます。勝手にそう思っています。新聞に載る「秘密の花園」、歌のタイトルになる「秘密の花園」、小説の題名としての「秘密の花園」、お店の名前の「秘密の花園」、おそらく何にでもつけられるのだと思います。

ところが、このシークレット・ガーデンを「秘園」と訳すと淫靡な世界が強くなり、「密庭」だと忍者が見えてきます。それだけ人の心をつかんで離さない、何か得体の知れない力を持っているのかもしれません。

鳥がもつれるように飛んでいる
百合の花咲く森の中には
アプリコットの実がなる木

心に佇む秘密の花園
永久に花が咲き誇り
夜を越えて照らしつづける
氷と雪の冬の季節を

ひいおじいちゃまの畑は
もう昔の面影はない
納屋は朽ち果てて
囲いもなくなって
アイダホに吹く春風で
畑を覆う土が空に舞う

昔から知ってる人の
亡霊がまだ眼に浮かぶ
古びた台所にいて
かがんではため息ひとつ
何もなく過ぎてった人生
そ知らぬ顔をする世の中

心に佇む秘密の花園
年を重ねても若いまま
夜を越えて照らしつづける
氷と雪の冬の季節を

でも何と言っても
すっかり変わった私だけど
やっぱりまだ同じ私
結婚式にいる私
お墓の前にいる私
大人っぽくてかっこいい
人の服を着てる私

子供の頃の目をして
鏡をのぞきこむと
柳の枝が垂れている
季節は春
青にきらめく鳥たちが
