19世紀のクジラ漁です。でかい帆船で出港し、クジラ捕獲圏内に入ると、数名が乗れる小さいボートを降ろし、銛をもって直に格闘します。

実に原始的です。どれぐらいの確率で獲れたのか、一回につき何名の命が失われたのかは定かではありませんが、歌の中では、人命損失5名分よりクジラが獲れなかったほうが痛手だという船長の言葉があります。

実に正直です。もし、科学技術が発展した21世紀にこんなことを言うと大変なことになります。

だから、こうなります。「クジラの一頭や二頭を逃したからといって、何が悔しいのであろうか。大切な友、仲間、尊い命が失われたことのほうが、数億倍も悔しいし、そして、なによりも悲しい。今後、こういう悲劇が起こらぬよう、万全の態勢で漁に臨みたいと思う」

中は覗けないので確証はありませんが、人の心の中は案外進歩していないかもしれません。
