太平洋の真ん中当たり、ホノルルの近く赤道あたりにハウランド・アイランドという小さい無人島があります。太平洋戦争の戦地のひとつにもなったこの島に向かっていたアメリア・エアハート(Amelia Earhart: 1897-1937?)が消息を絶ったのが、そのおよそ4年前の1937年7月2日です。
この曲は、そうした内容をもとに作られたもので、グリーンブライヤー・ボーイズ(The Greenbriar Boys)やカントリー・ジェントルメン(The Country Gentlemen)などもその後カバーしています。
