アイルランドという国は、過去にも大英帝国に上から押さえつけられていたという歴史を有している国です。そのような状況で、18世紀終わりごろに大英帝国に対する反乱を起こします。元はイギリス国教会によって権力を奪われた長老派（プレスビテリアン）が中心になって組織したザ・ユナイテッド・アイリッシュマンというグループによって起こされました。

そんな1798年の反乱をテーマにしたのが、今回の曲です。「槍をもって月明りとともに自由を求めて戦おう」、そんな感じの歌です。

この中に、hurrah（フラー）ということばが登場しますが、スペルも多々あって、hurray, hurrah, そしてhooray（フーレイ）などもあります。どれもだいたい似たような意味ですが、日本語の「フレー、フレー、紅組」のフレーの語源ともいわれています。元は戦いの雄叫びだと思います。

ちなみに、メロディーは『ザ・ウェアリング・オブ・ザ・グリーン(The Wearing Of The Green)』と同じです。
