パトリック・ジョーゼフ・マコール(Patrick Joseph McCall: 1861-1919)のペンによる1798年に起きたアイルランド反乱を描いた作品です。

簡単に言うと、いや、詳しいことはよくわからないので適当に言うと、アイルランドはイギリスに押さえつけられていたのでどうにかしようと考え、イギリスの反抗したのですが、あえなくやられてしまい、イギリスに併合されてしまいます。

独立を勝ち取ったのはそれから100年以上もたった20世紀に入ってからで、いまもなお、アイルランド島の北の一部は「イギリス」ということになっています。

Wexford: ウェックスフォード、アイルランド共和国東部にある県
the Barrow: ザ・バロー、アイルランド東部ケルト海に流れる川、リバー・バロー(River Barrow)
Ross: ロス、キルケニー県近くのウェックスフォード県内バロー川流域にある町、ニュー・ロス(New Ross)
Harvey: ハービー、ビーチャム・バジェナル・ハービー(Beauchamp Bagenal Harvey: -1798)、ニュー・ロスの戦いで指揮官となる
the Slaney: スレイニー、ウェックスフォード県を流れアイリッシュ海に流れる川、リバー・スレイニー(River Slaney)
